Tito’s Vodka is a small batch, of gluten-free vodka produced in small amounts in Austin, Texas, by Tito Beveridge. It is distilled six times in a pot still and then filtered to achieve the degree of excellence Tito is looking for in his spirit. Because they take bulk NGS (Neutral Grain Spirit/ethanol) and rectify/redistill it before calling it “handmade,” many true microdistillers have taken issue with their use of the phrase. They ferment and distill their own goods, which is a far more costly and labor-intensive procedure.
Origin Of Tito’s Vodka
Tito Beveridge, “The Vodka Guy” grew up in San Antonio and attended Vanderbilt for a year before returning to Texas to study geology and geophysics at UT. He went into oil and gas after graduation. After Texas, he ran held portable dynamite seismic teams in Venezuela and Colombia. He returned to Texas and founded a drilling firm in Houston. He grew “tired of chasing the buck” and moved to Austin.
Tito studied groundwater geology in Austin before venturing into the mortgage industry. Around 1992 or 1993, he began making flavored vodka as presents for friends. The mortgage person, he said, when a stranger approached him at a party. But it made Tito ponder…
When mortgage rates rose a few points, he began approaching liquor shop owners and managers to sell his flavored vodkas. “No, look at all the dust on those bottles’ shoulders!” they all said. They told Tito he may have something if he could develop a smooth vodka that could be drunk straight.
So course, Tito, who had never distilled anything, asked them how. “Well, I don’t know, you want to go into the vodka business!”
So Tito went out to study distillation. It was the mid-nineties, pre-internet, so information was scarce, and it looked as if the library had burned all books on spirits and distillation. Tito’s investigation led him to historic moonshiners and prohibition-era busts. He began cooking by creating stills from images using a copper conduit and an outside fryer for heat. He merely continued tinkering with the still and the recipe until he discovered something his friends liked. “I simply kept working at it. We purchased every vodka in the store, placed them in mason jars, and sampled them all to find the two finest. That was when I knew I had the appropriate formula.”
Tito tried to get funding for his “vodka so smooth you could drink it straight” but failed. Investors turned him down repeatedly, thinking he would never receive his license since Texas had never had a licensed distillery or a distributor. So he took the money he had accumulated while working abroad and built up 19 credit cards for over $88,000. Constructed a one-man distillery, campaigned to change Texas regulations, started the microdistillery movement, built a production still, and went into business.
Tito spent his early years in the one-room cottage, cooking vodka and sleeping when he could. He spent his day hand-bottling vodka, screwing on caps, and gluing paper labels. And he’d go to parties, presenting his vodka to new people and establishing a dedicated following. Tito would return home fatigued and elated, just to wake up and repeat the process. Then I’d go create it, sell it, come back and produce more, sleeping next to the still and kind of bootstrapping it.
It took the firm almost eight years to get going. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is now one of the most popular distilleries and one of the purest spirits available. Tito unwittingly began a revolution that he has maintained to this day.
