Have you heard of sattu, the most recent meal to be added to the list of vegan options? You may have tried it in the form of laddoos and Litti Chokha before, but now check out these recipes for sweet and savory sattu drinks to find a refreshing beverage to help you fight the heat!
Sattu is a dish that is prepared from chana (gram), which has been soaked in water, dried, and then roasted over a flame from a wood fire before being pounded into a fine powder that has a light yellow color. This earthy flour is subsequently eaten in a number of ways, including as a drink known as sattu sharbat, as the stuffing for a dish known as Litti Chokha (which is considered a delicacy in Bihar), as stuffing for paranthas, and in many other ways.
The flour, which had its beginnings as a means of providing inexpensive and healthy meals for the laborers, is slowly making its way into the urban culinary scenes. In fact, the BBC has termed it the next Indian street food craze because of how quickly it is making its way into the urban culinary scenes. Litti Chokha has taken over the streets not just of Bihar but also of numerous other cities throughout the country at this point, and the aroma of the dough balls, which are packed with the powder and baked over an open fire, fills the air. Litti Chokha is now a national phenomenon. What is also being noticed more often is an increase in the availability of sattu sharbat, which is a refreshing drink that is ideal for the warmer months and is made with common spices, water, onions, and coriander. The summertime mainstay is not only satiating, but also invigorating, and it helps one feel full for an extended period of time.
What advantages does sattu have to offer?
The flour is simple for the digestive system to process and delivers a surge of instantaneous energy to the body. In addition, the flour is an excellent source of plant-based protein; one hundred grams of it has slightly more than twenty grams of protein, which makes it an excellent foundation for a post-exercise meal or beverage.
Additionally, as it helps prevent bloating in the body, it speeds up the metabolism, which enables you to lose excess calories more quickly and keeps you feeling full for a longer period of time. It is also reported to assist in the development of cleaner skin, in the prevention of the wear and tear of skin cells, and in the upkeep of the body’s moisture levels.
In addition, sattu helps the body regain its magnesium and potassium stores, which contributes to a more even distribution of nutrients throughout the body. Because it helps the body maintain its natural temperature, it is an absolute need during the hotter months.
