A 72,000-mph asteroid was spotted near Earth

A newly found asteroid that might be as tall as the Empire State Building will swing by Earth later this week.

2022 OE2 will approach Earth on Wednesday, according to NASA's CNEOS database.Due of these uncertainties, astronomers propose a size range, which for 2022 OE2 is 170-380 metres (558-1,247 feet).

At its largest, the asteroid would be as tall as New York City's Empire State Building (1,250 ftThis is 40x quicker than a rifle bullet and 1/3 as fast as lightning.

The asteroid is one of more than 29,000 near-Earth objects (NEOs) found by astronomers. It refers to any celestial body within 30 million miles of Earth's orbit.

This is 13 times the distance between Earth and the moon, therefore there's no fear of a collision. Astronomers estimate asteroids' sizes depending on how brilliant they seem in the sky.
