Beijing warned Joe Biden against 'playing with fire' on Taiwan, according to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

At the height of tensions between the two countries over a planned trip to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

China's President Xi Jinping urged his American counterpart Joe Biden not to "play with fire" on the island, which Beijing claims as its own.

Biden and Xi discussed a wide variety of issues, including pandemic recovery, trade, and supply chain resilience, during their two-hour and 17-minute conversation.

But Taiwan dominated the discussion. According to a Chinese readout of the conversation, Xi informed Biden.

"The solid will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people" is to protect China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

To play with fire is to court disaster. It is anticipated that the United States would be forthcoming with its thoughts on this."
