Ex-Bolivian President Gets 10 Years In Prison For 'Coup'

Jeanine Ruiz was sentenced to 10 years in jail Friday on crimes related to her 2019 inauguration during violent demonstrations that led to Evo Morales' departure and exile.

She was convicted of neglect of office and acting violating the constitution when she declared herself president in a coup.

Morales resigned after countrywide demonstrations alleging vote-rigging in an Oct. 20 election he claimed to have won. Morales denies fraud. Morales fled to Mexico after 37 died in demonstrations.

The court also condemned previous military and police commanders to 10 years in jail. Four previous military commanders got shorter terms.
