Here's why we may never know who won the $1.34B prize.

One ticket sold at a Speedway gas station in Des Plaines, Illinois, matched the winning numbers of 13, 36, 45, 57, and 67, plus the Mega Ball of 14.

Illinois lottery officials said last-minute ticket sales upped the payout from $1.2 billion to $1.6 billion.

Illinois allows certain winners to remain anonymous. Monday, no winner had emerged. Lottery winners above $250,000 might request anonymity.

Harold Mays, Illinois lottery director, said Saturday, "We haven't heard from the winner yet." "We don't know whether they realise they won. Check your tickets, players!"

Winners have 12 months from the drawing date to receive the highest prize in Illinois history, but only 60 days to select between a lump sum and yearly instalments.

In 2018, a South Carolina winner claimed the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot. Other states don't compel winners to come forward: Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, and Ohio.
