Here's How to Cut Onions Without Crying?

 It's scientific: Onions release a chemical when cut that irritates ocular nerves, causing tears. It's inevitable, but you may reduce the blow and avoid a catastrophic meltdown.

Use a sharp knife first. Sharper knives reduce onion-chopping tears. A dull knife will shatter the onion instead of smoothly slicing it, releasing more eye-irritating chemical.

Freeze the onion for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing. Cold stops tear-causing enzyme from escaping.

If you do this, slice shortly after removing the onion from the freezer; as it heats, the enzyme will become more active and hurt your eyes.

You can also keep the compound from getting into the air by putting chopped onions in a bowl of very cold water as you chop them.
