Food Prices Add to Asia’s Security Concerns

Smaller Asian nations warned of growing food costs at a regional security summit, citing political instability in Sri Lanka and Pakistan as a cautionary tale.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called for an Asia free of "violence and intimidation" on Saturday, condemning China as he outlined America's strategy for the area.

Both the US and China are using the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue to promote their rival visions for regional peace, even as the Ukraine crisis takes Washington's attention.

Austin and Wei Fenghe met on the margins of the conference to discuss defense issues. Friday, the leaders sparred for over an hour about Taiwan and regional security.

Richard Marles, Australia's Deputy Prime Minister, said that climate change will now be taken into account when the country plans its defense and deals with other countries.
