Why crying causes runny nose?

Emotions are healthy. Feeling your feelings is sometimes the only way to get through difficult circumstances. This sometimes requires tears.

The worst phase may be severe sobbing, when you feel like your heart may burst. The extreme sobbing might make your nasal cavity seem enlarged and clogged, as if you couldn't breathe.

Your body goes into overdrive when you cry. Your heart beats and you may sweat before your parasympathetic nervous system regulates heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing.

During this process, your body starts to make endorphins, which help you feel better.

When you weep, tears come from your tear ducts. They flood the eyes till they can't contain anymore fluid and tears fall.

Lower eyelid tear ducts secrete tears into the nasal cavity. A runny nose results.
