Fried chicken is, without a doubt, a favorite of the majority of the population. The fried chicken was our go-to dish for any occasion, including parties, business meetings, holidays, and even daily life.
It’s delicious, and it just takes a few minutes to put together! There is no need for anything more than cooking oil and the correct breading mix. The most important ingredient in the breading mix is, of course, flour.
What will happen if you run out of flour? An air fryer may be used to make fried chicken without the need for flour by simply coating the chicken with baking powder before cooking. Yes, that’s what I meant.

Flour Substitute for Fried Chicken
Cornstarch is perhaps the second-best substitute for baking powder. Any fried dish, including meat or vegetables, may benefit from the crisping power of cornstarch, and it’s quite cheap. After marinating the chicken, coat it with a mixture of cornstarch, water, and the rest of the ingredients. Deep-frying is the best way to use it.
Other varieties of flour
Most chefs use all-purpose flour for breading flour when preparing the breading mix for traditional fried chicken meals like chicken fingers. But keep in mind that you may use potato starch, cornflour, or even rice flour in place of ordinary flour.
The same outcome may be achieved by using normal flour. Cooking over high heat might cause certain flours to absorb too much oil or burn quickly, so use caution when using them.
Do not use any flour
Surely it’s a possibility, after all! The skin of the bird should not be removed. Instead, let it sit for at least a day in a spice marinade of your choosing. You’ll be amazed with how light, delicious, and crispy the chicken is without the use of flour in the deep-frying process.
Use a skillet or a Dutch oven for cooking it in.
Chop your chicken into bite-sized pieces once it has been cut and marinated evenly. To prevent them from clumping together, fry them one at a time. A big volume of oil is not required. There should be just enough space to cook the food on both sides. Make sure you cook it for about 8 minutes, or until the top is a light brown color.
Embrace the use of eggs and bread crumbs.
Try swapping this strong mix for your regular flour if the texture of Japanese tempura appeals to you. To get started, just beat the eggs and place them in a big mixing bowl. Once the bread crumbs are on the tray, they may be put away.
Dip your left hand into the egg mixture and thoroughly coat the marinated chicken. With your right hand, coat the chicken pieces in the bread crumbs, being sure to get all of the bread crumbs on the chicken pieces as well.
Your hands will stay clean and dry with this procedure. When putting eggs on a chicken, use the opposite hand to do it.
Fry: it’s frozen
Deep-fry the chicken immediately after removing it from the freezer the following day after marinating it overnight. If you combine cold chicken with hot oil, you may end up with a crispy golden chicken that’s both tasty and crispy. Defrosting is unnecessary. Make sure that the temperature is set correctly.
Easy Chicken Without Flour Recipe
½ tsp Himalayan salt
½ tsp garlic powder
1 ½ tbsp baking powder
½ tsp onion powder
2 lbs of chicken wings
¼ tsp curry powder
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp cayenne pepper
- At least 24 hours should pass before you cook your chicken wings if they are still frozen. To guarantee food safety and proper handling, cook the chicken after it has been defrosted.
- Once you’ve washed the chicken well, use a clean towel or kitchen napkin to pat it dry. Before marinating the chicken, make sure it is completely dry so that the marinade mixture can coat it evenly. Allow 30 minutes of marinating time for the chicken before placing it in a clean, deep bowl.
- When you’re ready to assemble your dish, add the ingredients in the following order: Himalayan salt (black pepper), cayenne pepper (cayenne pepper), curry powder, garlic powder (garlic powder), onion powder (powder) To ensure that the flavors of the marinade are evenly distributed throughout the chicken, mix everything together well before placing it in the refrigerator.
- The marinade mixture should be applied on both sides of the chicken. To guarantee that no part of the chicken is left uncoated throughout the cooking process, you may either coat them all at once or treat each piece individually. Alternately, you may toss the chicken in the marinade mixture to ensure that it is evenly covered with it.
- Seal the marinated chicken wings in a big zip-top bag or aluminum foil and store them in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours, or overnight is OK. It’s OK to marinate the chicken wings for an hour if you don’t have time to fry them straight away.
- Using a drizzle of olive oil or vegetable oil, remove the chicken from the refrigerator. If you’re trying to save money on your dinner preparations, cooking oil isn’t necessary.
- Make the most of your time and money.
- Preheat your air fryer to between 390 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit to begin cooking. Before frying the chicken thighs and wings, check the temperature using a food thermometer to make sure it’s ready and accurate.
- On each side of the chicken wings, they should be deep-fried for around 13-14 minutes. Depending on how big your chicken wings are, this will also affect how much sauce you need to use. Smaller pieces should be fried for 10-11 minutes on each side; larger pieces should be cooked for 15 minutes.
- Batch frying is the best way to guarantee that the insides of the patties are cooked through. To prevent undercooking the chicken wings, avoid overcrowding the air fryer.
- Remove the food from the air fryer and allow it to cool for five minutes before serving. Make your own low-calorie dip and serve it with your favorite side dishes like mashed potatoes or French fries.
- For up to three days, you may store chicken wings in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Using the air fryer to warm it again is unnecessary; you can reheat it in the microwave oven instead. Consumption is required immediately after it is heated since it is only good for one use.
Do I Have to Use a Specific Type of Cooking Oil?
Only canola or peanut oil would do for me. Fried chicken, in particular, is a great candidate for any of these oils. It adds a savory taste to the meal in addition to delivering a sharp finish.
As long as you don’t mind using the oil till it darkens a little, you may. Oil should be thrown away if it’s turned too black. If you cook your chicken in too much oil, it will turn out harsh and burnt.
Since olive oil and sesame oil are both high-heat cooking oils, I don’t recommend using them. Burned fried chicken has an unpleasant taste and may raise the risk of cancer from carcinogens, which are substances that may cause cancer in humans if ingested.
Cooking Chicken in Oil Instead of Flour: Is It Better for Your Health?
If you’re looking for gluten-free and carb-free fried chicken, removing the flour will make a difference since the chicken will be less “fattening.” However, you will need to remove the breadcrumbs that were used.
It is unlikely that eliminating flour from a meal would have any significant influence on its calorie or fat content.
The calorie count per piece of chicken may be lowered by 2-3 grams because of the modest quantity of flour used in the coating.
Even if the plant is now healthy, we don’t think it’s necessary to remove it for this reason alone. It won’t get healthier until you cook it. No matter which of the alternatives are used, this is still true.
